“Building America”, an event in which I painted a wall with my body. Thinking literally about the black body as a tool quickly brings attention to slavery and its histories, but exploring the idea further I understand that this building is an active action based on progress. The final result was in my hands. I create a reverent domestic space to reflect my matriarchal upbringing. This active creation, the ability to construct one’s own surroundings takes place in the present and determines the future. America, although comfortable with its infrastructure, is not complete. It is up to us to continue to build, form and shape this country we live in, for surely it is shaping us.
