Kings of MEWE
“The Kings of MEWE” is a photo series that addresses black imagery through an Afrofuturist mode of working. Thinking about my own reality and the African American imagery that surrounds me, I began to think about the types of images and things that are synonymous with black culture. With a childlike response to my own inner inquiry of “black culture”, I asked why. Why it was the same types of things are constantly reappearing? So in response to this I googled the phrase “black man reading a book”. In total there were no more than 30 images of black men reading. In the reverse I googled the phrase “white man reading a book”. Pages upon pages of images appeared. Photographs, paintings, drawings, computer generated images all poured out for as far as the finger could scroll. Simply put, the very notion of a black man reading a book is marginal at best and this truth coincides with the world’s unbiased global database system…. Or is it unbiased? Either way the imagery simply does not exist. And so I am left with only one option. I must create it, for future generations, so they many know that there is more to their being than flashy “chainz” and pimped out rides.
